Under a different light

The Ulster University MFA in Photography end of year show

Under a Different Light is the end of year show for us Ulster University MFA in Photography students, hosted by the incredible Belfast Exposed galleries from the 1st - 23rd May. This exhibition is the culmination of the last two years with the incredible works of 10 students, covering a wealth of areas, on show for everyone to come and see.

WHAT YOU LEAVE BEHIND

What You Leave Behind is my MFA in Photography final project, the work is a reflective look at consumerism and mortality. Where once items that where left behind to families and friends as an extension of their own self and identity, has today given way to large amounts of ubiquitous disposable products. Individually what do we count as important to be passed down?

Through the use of typology, the work represents an intimate portrait into the artists own objects, of which a very limited number actually serve as part of the artist's identity. Through the process of sifting the artist challenges himself to choose only a handful of items that are of meaning to him and also to those he is closest to.

The work invites the viewer to consider the concept of value to that of themselves and the other.

once more with feeling

This earlier work features an intimate look into the life of a woman with Usher's Syndrome, chasing moments of independence at a time of deepening dependance. The images here are a small number taken candidly, without posing, as she embraces pivotal moments, from the sounds of crashing waves to the feeling of the wind or rain against her face.
